Another long winded political rant

Do you know what makes me want to poke out my eyeballs!  Politics!  Actually I really don’t have a problem with politics my problem is with politicians and people who either fail to face the issues head on, or are blinded by dogmas and beliefs that are orthogonal to the political debate…

Idiots in Politics

A friend emailed me this link to a news report about an Idaho Gubernatorial candidate who is openly using his Mormon faith to politic. Briefly he setup a political meeting where only LDS (mormon) men who were of elders in the church could attend. They openly said non-mormons weren’t allowed to attend and due to “space” concerns women were turned away as well (rather I think he honestly views them as lesser because they don’t hold a priesthood office). The meeting was a call to the “elders of isreal” to discuss how they were going to fulfill a prophecy by Joseph Smith to save the United States Constitution. This guy honestly thinks he is fulfilling this prophecy, otherwise why not let the non-members attend? Why not let women attend? I can’t understand why a politician who is serious about getting elected would actively turn people away discriminate against his constituents.

Luckily this guy probably wont get elected, but if he does I will forever have lost faith in Mormons and politics.

Having seen all the loony politicians out there I am seriously considering going into politics, there are so many problems with our country that need to be solved and it seems that only idiots are applying for the job. I’m not claiming to be Einstein or anything but seriously how is it that these idiots get elected?

Do you want further proof of idiots in politics, check out this interview that starts around the 1:50 mark Colbert Report – better-know-a-district Georgia’s 8th Lynn Westmoreland.  This SENATOR was openly campaigning for the 10 commandments to be hung in all public (government) buildings yet he was unable to name them all, and was unable to think of a better public location (cough, churches, cough).

My problems with Mormons their political practices

Every time the major political elections occur the leaders of the Mormon church send out a letter to be read over the pulpit. There are two sentences in the letter I want to briefly discuss:

  1. We urge church members, to study the issues and candidates carefully..
  2. seek out… leaders who will act with integrity and are “wise,” “good,” and “honest,”

These two sentences suggest a few things to me.

  1. Mormons should be studying the issues more
  2. Selection of a candidate based upon a party affiliation alone is a mistake

So why is it that anytime somebody suggests that they might vote democrat in Utah they get hit with a barrage of insults and attacks? I have friends who suffered seriously marital strife because they voted for Obama. If the republican party were the “savior” of America that most Utahns think it is then wouldn’t the Mormon church say something like “you guys have been doing a great job, voting down party lines, keep it up!”

Please open your eyes and listen to what your leaders are telling you. I invite you to pick an issue on which you have strong feelings and then do serious research where you consider the opposing political view and give it a chance to take place in your mind.  It cannot hurt you.

I have tried sharing websites, books, and documentaries with people who have said to me “I don’t want to watch or read that, I’m scared of what I might learn.” Information can only set you free, ideas can only expand your mind and understanding.  Refusing to inform yourself because you fear your ability to make intelligent decisions in the presence of new data is a cop-out. I know its scary to think that the “truths” and “ideals” you’ve held all your life might in fact not be “truths” or “ideals” but it is our job to wake up and make informed decision.  We need to understand the political issues and ramifications of whatever platform we ascribe to.

People please open your eyes and learn about what is going on, I’m convinced that if we do, if we really study the issues and come to intelligent conclusions we can prevent idiots like the Idaho gubernatorial candidate from getting elected and replace Senators likes the one from Georgia with good intelligent candidates who understand the issues and will spend their time pushing meaningful legislation.

Last night we watched the movie Across the Universe.  Both Aubrey and I thought it was a fantastic movie. While the quality of the film was very good and it was interesting artistically it had some very strong political message, which Aubrey and I discussed long after the movie ended.  Until recently I had only viewed the “hippie” movement as a group of promiscuous druggies who just wanted to complain about the government. Sadly I feel that many people share these feelings.

A while ago I wrote about a survey the RNC sent me. I wanted to do my American duty so I posted the survey online for anybody to read.  I then proceeded to point out several pieces of rhetoric that I found laughable.  I guess they don’t read my blog because they sent me another survey.  They changed a few things this time, the story is the same though.

Please take my survey! sincerely The RNC

A few weeks ago I got a letter from the RNC. Last week Aubrey got a nearly identical letter. As I read the letters I could not keep myself from laughing.  I have long considered myself conservative but don’t affiliate myself with any particular political party. To my surprise the letter ended with a survey.  I’ve decided to share a few of the gems from the letter.
